WEEK 7: APPRECIATION OF THE NATURE & ENVIRONMENT, SUSTAINABILITY IN ISLAM

Assalamualaikum and hi!

For this week, which is the last week of our usrah, we started usrah with a tadarus session of Surah al-Kahfi, the first 10 verses and the last 10 verses. Then, we learn about appreciation of the nature & environment and sustainability in Islam. For the first lesson, I summarise it in a poster that I made below:

For sustainability in Islam, in my opinion, the definition of trust or amanah is the first principle that drives Islamic teachings on environmental sustainability. As a caliph, a man must take all reasonable steps to ensure that the property entrusted to him is passed on to the next generation in its purest form. Everyone, according to Islam, is the guardian of nature and must live in peace with all other beings. All Muslims have a responsibility to love, preserve, and care for the environment. Allah SWT hates all forms of corruption, including environmental corruption, which includes industrial waste, environmental damage, misuse and arbitrary mismanagement of natural resources.

“And do good as Allah has been good to you. And do not seek to cause corruption in the earth. Allah does not love the corrupters.” (Quran, 28:77)

Prophet Muhammad SAW said: “The world is beautiful and verdant, and verily God, be He exalted, has made you His stewards in it, and He sees how you acquit yourselves.” (Muslim)

I will include some opinions that have been submitted by other usrah members:

1. Amrina Azmi: "Environment is fragile and very important. The sustainability of the environment really needs to happen. Even Islam really takes it serious about the issue of the environment. We need to take care of our environment so the future generation also can use and benefit from it. protect the environment is also the action to show our love to Allah as He the one that creates animals, plants, and nature. even though we already perform 5 daily prayers, protecting the environment is also our job that we need to care for in our lives."
2.
Nurin Qistina: "I agree with
sister amirah husna. Since we lived in Malaysia with multiracial races, we need to care for everyone. We shouldn’t be racist or whatever. A sustainable society is when people help and positively support each other."
3. Fathiah Najati: "There are many ways that we can do to appreciate the nature and environment like practicing 3R, prevent open burning. Protecting the environment is really essential because we are the ones who gonna live in this environment."
4. Nadirah Hanim: "Protecting the environment is one of the important elements of Islam. So, as a Muslim, it's our responsibility to take of it, be it plants, animals, or water."
5. Afiefah Jamalullain: "What I got from the video, the way to appreciate our environment is by taking care of our nature and environment. Ways to take care of our nature by practicing 3R reduce, reuse, recycle. For example,e we bring our own shopping bags when we visit the mall. Next prevents open burning. It’s important to take care of the environment to make sure future generations can have a life that convenient for them."
6. Husna Ilhami Hussairi: "Sustain and preserve nature is the responsibility of every human being. When Rasulullah was in the war, he also instructed his companions not to damage plants and not to kill animals."
7. Nur Athirah Munirah: "It's our responsibility to take care of nature. For example, animals, plants."
8. Farhah Fisol: "We can do many things to appreciate our nature and environment. For example, we can practice the 3R (Reuse, reduce, recycle).besides, we can prevent open burning to keep our surroundings clean. We have to appreciate our environment."
9. Nur Affrina Fahmy: "In my opinion, Islam and Sustainable Development are related to all aspects of our lives. Sustainable is the balance and simultaneous realization of consumer welfare. It is from our daily lives to economic efficiency. That's how big and deep Islam is in terms of dealing with the balance of our lives. And another important thing is a relation. Relation man with Allah, with other human beings and with the environment. and that are the fundamental rules."
10. Nur Syamimi Ramly: "If we believe that everything belongs to Allah and that we are just transiting then we have to treat the earth as the amanah from him."
11. Aqilah Tarmizi: "For sustainability in Islam, in my opinion, man should responsible for what they do to the earth. It is because Man is the caliph for all creatures. Save the environment also one of the actions to show our love to Allah."
12. Nur Adlin: "From what I understand and can conclude, the key to a happy life is one of them is to be grateful. Being grateful for what God has given will keep our lives free from envy, riya, and other bad qualities. Also, being grateful and appreciating nature is showing our attitude of believing in the existence of the power of Allah SWT himself. Therefore, we need to be thankful for all the blessings of Allah from the smallest that we have not paid attention to."
13. Nurul Ellysha Fitri Zakaria: "We need to care for our environment as an action to portray our gratitude toward Allah S.W.T. plus, our earth is dying due to climate change and the ecosystem is unbalanced. Furthermore, since our University is rahmatan lil alamin- which is mercy to all creation. Thus, we must take care of the tree, animals such as polar bears that are dying due to climate change since tree and animal also the creation of Allah. So I love the statement from mufti menk, " true love of the maker extends ways beyond just ur five daily prayers."
14. Muna: "As Muslims, it is our duty to take care of all the things that Allah has given us, so that should also include nature. But, for some strange reason, when mentioned the phrase 'environmental-friendly and the like it's hard to picture Islam, yeah? It's a novel concept even in our community. Though we shouldn't really blame anyone for this, instead it is up to us to find easy, practical ways that everyone can do to make the earth a better place. Many 'eco-friendly' stuff is simply not suitable for us."
15. A'lia Shakirah: "We need to appreciate what Allah gives us. He gives us the responsibility to take care of the earth. with the aqal Allah gives us we can think about our actions. There are so many things we can do to protect the earth by applying 3r, loves nature by not do open burning and all the things Allah create for us. Do what Allah loves, take good care of our pet, if we see any animal hurt maybe we can get them a doctor or give them food."
16. Wan Maizatul Akmal: "Good Muslim not only having a good relationship with God and people but also the environment..cause everything created to balance the earth ecosystem with their specific purpose.. that’s so beautiful of Allah and we should take care of the animals and the nature as mercy and care to them can give us paradise."
17. Fatin Nur Athirah: "In my opinion, we can also appreciate and preserve nature and its environment by implementing the concept of sustainability in our life. For example, one of our lecturer's colleagues is a doctor in a certain hospital from overseas. These are sustainable development in action! His house is an example of a self-sustaining house in Fiji. 99% of needs are fulfilled by the vicinity of the house. Solar panel for electricity, vegetables from garden, milk and yogurt from cows, meat from homegrown goats and chickens, eggs from chickens. Many poor households instead of going into sustaining behavior, end up complaining and not helping themselves."

After that, all the usrah members gave a very touching last speech as this was our last session together.

As Hari Raya Aidilfitri is approaching, we need to make an e-card, write a greeting, and give it to a partner we have chosen. I gave the e-card I had made to sister Farhah, and I received the e-card from her. Below I enclose the e-cards we received from each other:

This is the card that I gave to sister Farhah
